WORLDWIDE PC SALES TO PEAK THIS YEAR| Worldwide PC sales are to peak at 12 per cent this year. Beginning next year, sales are to decline with consumers expected to replace fewer computers, according to a report by financial management firm Merrill Lynch, the Reuters news agency has reported. Though computer firms are likely to continue to produce and market notebooks, the lack of a major operating systems upgrade such as the Windows 95 software could deter new computer purchases. PC unit growth is expected to decrease to nine per cent in 2005 and six per cent in 2006. Revenue growth in the market is to shrink to six per cent this year and about two per cent over the next two years. |DM Europe|

PACMAN-SINGAPORE| A group of Singapore-based researchers are taking Pacman out of the arcade hall of fame and setting him loose on the streets. The virtual reality gaming system allows players to become the insatiable cookie-munching hero of the classic computer game or one of his ghostly nemeses, simply by donning a backpack and a pair of goggles. But instead of becoming a yellow blob trapped in a low-resolution two-dimensional maze, "Human Pacman" can roam freely through real environments... Appears to be a variation of Pacmanhattan with head mounted displays... |SmartMobs|

AD AGENCIES FREAK OUT OVER GENERATION-MOBILE|In theory, advertising agencies should love mobile telephones. What better way to reach consumers on the go?

In practice, though, advertising industry executives are growing increasingly concerned that the popularity of mobile telephones will only make their jobs harder. Their worries centre on the impact that mobile phone use is having on the social lives of young people. They fear the phones are creating a new, more furtive generation that will be more difficult to reach with traditional advertising. |Textually||Financial Times|

"That's not the way the world really works anymore," he continued. "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality -- judiciously, as you will -- we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do." |Pat Kane|

SHIRKY: FLAMING AND THE DESIGN OF SOCIAL SOFTWARE| We have grown quite adept at designing interfaces and interactions between computers and machines, but our social tools -- the software the users actually use most often -- remain badly misfit to their task. Social interactions are far more complex and unpredictable than human/computer interaction, and that unpredictability defeats classic user-centric design. As a result, tools used daily by tens of millions are either ignored as design challenges, or treated as if the only possible site of improvement is the user-to-tool interface. |Shirky|

INTERNAL BRAIN ACTIVITY DEFINES PERCEPTION| What is real and what is imagined? To try and answer that question, scientists monitored the brains of ferrets as the animals were forced to watch clips of "The Matrix." The connection may not be so obvious, but the researchers worked from the assumption that ferret brains resemble human brains - at least at a basic level. Scientists generally agree that you can see the rudiments of humans in mammals like ferrets. Then the team got inside the ferrets' heads.

The researchers at the University of Rochester in New York wired the brains of ferrets as the animals watched the mind-bending 1999 movie, as well as when they watched TV static and when they sat in complete darkness. The lead researcher, Michael Weliky, says the study demonstrated a lesson that Keanu Reeves' character, Neo, learned in the first Matrix movie - that reality is more than what meets the eye. |ABC News|

NOKIA SMARTPHONE WITH WIDE-SCREEN VIEW| Finland's mobile phone manufacturer has launched three new devices at its flagship. European conference, where the future of mobility is top of the agenda. Nokia's latest smartphone, the 7710, takes a widescreen approach to helping users be productive on the move. The device was launched at the mobile phone maker's Mobility Conference in Monaco in Tuesday. Measuring 128mm by 69.5mm by 19mm, its 640 x 320 pixel touch-sensitive screen gives users a landscape view. Nokia claims this will allow a better Web browsing experience.

The 7710 uses the Series 90 operating system. Pen input and handwriting recognition are both supported, as is connectivity over Bluetooth, which the company clearly hopes will give it the edge in an already crowded market for smart phones. |Telecommunication|
