FIRST LIFE/SECOND LIFE MASHUP| University of Southern California's Julian Bleecker has a very interesting summer project going: Playing Battleships using Google Earth as a game board, but with the twist that you have to physically visit the location on the board you want to attack, using your mobile phone to "call in" a strike. |Lowstandart|

THE NEXT COMPUTER INTERFACE| A new haptic device will be shown at the next SIGGRAPH. This virtual reality system, the Fingertip Digitizer, has been developed at the University of Buffalo (UB). It will interpret your hand gestures and will translate them for your PC, medical devices or computer games. According to one developer, the Fingertip Digitizer "will help bridge the gap between what a person knows and what a computer knows" and a commercial version should be available within 3 years. "With this device a computer, cell phone or computer game could read human intention more naturally," explains Thenkurussi Kesavadas (a.k.a. kesh)[, director of UB's Virtual Reality Lab]. "Eventually the Fingertip Digitizer may be used as a high-end substitute for a mouse, a keyboard or a joystick." |ZDNet|

DIGITAL NATIVES: THE NEXT STEP IN BRAIN EVOLUTION| Technology is dividing us into digital natives and digital immigrants - and changing the way we think, says Richard Woods. Emily Feld is a native of a new planet. While the 20-year-old university student may appear to live in London, she actually spends much of her time in another galaxy - out there, in the digital universe of websites, e-mails, text messages and mobile phone calls. The behaviour of Feld and her generation, say experts, is being shaped by digital technology as never before, taking her boldly where no generation has gone before. It may even be the next step in evolution, transforming brains and the way we think. |PPF|

"My definition of an expert in any field is a person who knows enough about what's really going on to be scared." -P. J. Plauger, Computer Language, March 1983

SIMILE TIMELINE: LIKE GOOGLE MAPS FOR TIME-BASED INFORMATION| Timeline is a DHTML-based AJAXy widget for visualizing time-based events. There is a live example on the site that you can play with. Pan the timeline by dragging it horizontally. Just like Google Maps, Timeline can be used with zero software installation, server-side or client-side. And like Google Maps, you can populate Timeline with data by pointing it to an XML file (data file example included).|Del.icio.us|

COMIC-BASED STORYBOARDS IN THE UX DESIGN PROCESS | Mark Wehner, design researcher at Yahoo! presented best practices for using comic book panels in the design process at the Usability Professionals Association annual meeting earlier this month.

"Yahoo! has begun to use comic-based storyboards in the user centered design process for selected products. As the centerpiece of a participatory design process with customers, Yahoo! uses storyboards in a comic book form, and walks users through the comic panels to research concepts and reveal user needs." |PPF|
